Yes, it is possible. But I am not talking about frequent traveler programs here. Although these can get you free tickets, upgrades and hotel nights, this section is about the tricks you probably haven't thought about yet.
Stand-by Tickets
Airlines offer stand-by tickets to their staff. This is usually on a stand-by basis as you would guess from the name. But did you know that these tickets are also available for relatives and even close friends of staff members? You only need to know somebody working at an airline. Usually the airline requires that person you testify that you at least live with that person, (you don't have to get married). The normal discount you get is around 80%. Yes, not 80% of the price - but 80% off the price. A $800 ticket you could get for $160. The disadvantage is that you are never guaranteed the seat. Any fully paying passenger has priority.

One method straight out is to become a Travel Agent. Yes, a travel agent.

Unclaimed Tickets
Another way is to go for one of the many unclaimed tickets. Each day thousands of tickets don't get picked up and used for several reasons.
- Emergency Cases, where people cannot take a flight because they have to stay at home.
- Couples braking up and none of them wants the trip they had planned to take together
- People forgetting tickets (Yes, this happens too!)
Most of these are not discounted tickets but fully paid tickets that for some reasons don't get used.
